What is the Crypto Fear and Greed Index?
The Crypto Fear and Greed Index is a gauge published by Alternative.me that sums up the mood of the crypto market in a single number.
The index is calculated once a day and is based on Bitcoin market data.
A reading of 0 means extreme fear and 100 extreme greed.
Alternative.me divides the readings into five classes:
| Reading | Class | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 0–25 | Extreme fear | Investors are very worried, and selling pressure is often heavy. |
| 26–46 | Fear | The mood is cautious, and risk is avoided. |
| 47–54 | Neutral | Fear and greed are in balance. |
| 55–75 | Greed | Appetite for buying is growing, and more risk is taken. |
| 76–100 | Extreme greed | The market may be overheated. |
The class boundaries are derived from the index data published by Alternative.me.
How is the Fear and Greed Index calculated?
According to Alternative.me, the Crypto Fear and Greed Index is built from six components with different weights:
| Component | Weight | What is measured |
|---|---|---|
| Volatility | 25% | Bitcoin's price swings and largest drawdowns compared with the 30- and 90-day averages. Unusually large swings are read as a sign of fear. |
| Market momentum and volume | 25% | Trading volume and price direction compared with the 30- and 90-day averages. Large buying volumes in a rising market are read as greed. |
| Social media | 15% | The amount and intensity of Bitcoin-related discussion on social media. |
| Surveys | 15% | Investor surveys, which according to Alternative.me are currently paused. |
| Dominance | 10% | Bitcoin's share of the total crypto market value. A rising share is read as a sign of fear, because money flees riskier altcoins into Bitcoin. |
| Search trends | 10% | Changes in the volume and content of Bitcoin-related Google searches. |

How to read the Crypto Fear and Greed Index
The idea behind the index is that investors act on emotion: fear makes them sell too cheaply and greed makes them buy too expensively.
That is why some investors see extreme fear as a sign of a possible buying opportunity and extreme greed as a warning sign.
The index has clear limitations, however:
- The index describes only the Bitcoin market, so the situation of an individual altcoin can be completely different.
- The reading is based on what has already happened, so it doesn't predict future prices.
- The market can stay in fear or greed for weeks or months, so an extreme reading doesn't tell you when a turn will come.
Use the Fear and Greed Index as one piece of background information among others, not as a single buy or sell signal.
