What does the crypto market cap mean?
The crypto market cap is the sum of the market caps of all tracked cryptocurrencies.
A single coin's market cap is calculated by multiplying its price by the number of coins in circulation.
The figures on this page come from CoinGecko, which tracks more than 20,000 cryptocurrencies.
The market cap doesn't tell you how much money has been invested in the market, but what all the coins would be worth at the latest trade price.
If all holders tried to sell at the same time, the price would fall sharply, so the market cap can never be cashed out in full.
- Total market cap: the combined market cap of all tracked coins in euros.
- 24 h volume: the combined trading volume of all coins over the last day.
- 24 h change: the change in the total market cap over one day (CoinGecko calculates it in dollars).
What is Bitcoin dominance?
Bitcoin dominance is calculated by dividing Bitcoin's market cap by the market cap of the whole crypto market.
Changes in dominance are followed because they show which way money is moving within the crypto market:
- Bitcoin dominance rises: money moves into Bitcoin, which is often linked to uncertainty and reducing risk.
- Bitcoin dominance falls: other cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, grow faster than Bitcoin, which is often called an altcoin season (altseason).
Stablecoins distort the figure, because their value stays put even when the rest of the market falls.
That is why the page also shows Bitcoin dominance excluding stablecoins, which tells you Bitcoin's share of the cryptocurrencies whose prices actually move.
Bitcoin dominance is also one of the components of the Fear and Greed Index.
Why does the crypto market cap differ between websites?
The crypto market cap and Bitcoin dominance can differ slightly between websites, even when measured at the same time.
The differences arise because sites track a different number of cryptocurrencies and calculate circulating supply in different ways.
Whether tokenised funds, gold tokens and thinly traded coins are included also changes the total.
So always compare figures within the same source rather than from one site to another.
