How are crypto gainers and losers calculated?
Crypto gainers and losers are selected from the 100 largest cryptocurrencies by market cap.
Stablecoins, gold-backed tokens and tokenised funds are left out, because their price follows the dollar, the euro or gold rather than the crypto market.
The percentage change shows how much the coin's euro price has changed over a rolling 24-hour or 7-day period.
Rolling means that the 24-hour change is always calculated from this moment back one day, not from midnight.
- Price data: CoinGecko calculates a weighted average price from trading on hundreds of crypto exchanges.
- Intermediate price updates: Binance's public market data about once a minute for coins with a trading pair on Binance.
- Snapshot: the page stores the gainers and losers at the time of publication, and they switch to live data as soon as your browser has fetched new prices.
Why do crypto gainers and losers change every day?
Cryptocurrency prices swing much more than share prices, so the crypto gainers and losers can change completely within a few hours.
Coins with a smaller market cap usually move more sharply than Bitcoin or Ethereum, because even smaller amounts of money move their price.
Common reasons for a single coin rising or falling include:
- new exchange listings or delistings.
- the project's own news, such as upgrades, partnerships or security problems.
- token unlocks, which bring a lot of new supply onto the market at once.
- the mood of the whole market, which you can follow in the Fear and Greed Index.
- Bitcoin's price moves, which often pull the rest of the market along.
If almost all coins on the list are red or green in the same direction, the move is usually driven by the whole market rather than a single project.
You can follow the whole market on the page crypto market cap and Bitcoin dominance.
Should you use the gainers and losers list for investment decisions?
The crypto gainers and losers list tells you what has already happened in the market, but not what will happen next.
After a strong rise, a coin's price often levels off or falls as some buyers take profits.
A sharp fall may also have a real problem behind it, in which case a price that looks cheap is not a discount.
Before doing anything based on the list, look at least at the coin's trading volume, its longer price history and the reason behind the move.
Crypto gainers and losers: frequently asked questions
What are the crypto gainers and losers today?
The current crypto gainers and losers are shown in the tables at the top of this page, which update automatically.
The tables show the biggest 24-hour and 7-day rises and falls of the 100 largest cryptocurrencies, in euros.
How often do the crypto gainers and losers update?
They update on the page about once a minute while the page is open.
The market cap ranking and the prices of coins not on Binance update from CoinGecko about every 10 minutes.
Why aren't stablecoins on the gainers and losers list?
Stablecoins are pegged to, for example, the dollar or the euro, so their price hardly changes.
They would take up space on the list from coins whose prices actually move.
What time is the 24-hour change based on?
The 24-hour change is calculated on a rolling basis: the current price is compared with the price exactly one day ago.
So the change doesn't start at midnight, unlike a stock exchange's daily change.
